Choose the finished card size before designing, keep the contact details short and leave space around the edges. Use text boxes and pictures in the RemPress Studio Editor to build the layout, save an editable master and check a PDF or printed proof at the finished size.
Decide what the card needs to do
Write down the one action you want a recipient to take: call, email, visit a website or remember your name. A card handed out at a market may need a short description of what you sell; a card for an established professional may need only a name, role and direct contact details. Put the most useful information first.
Prepare the exact wording before arranging the page. Check the spelling of names, the email address and the website on a second device. Avoid squeezing every social profile onto a small card. If the website is easier to maintain than a printed list of services, let it carry the longer explanation.
Confirm the finished size and printing method
Ask the printer for its required trim size, safe area, bleed and file format before you begin. Different suppliers and card stock use different specifications. Choose the matching document size in the editor rather than resizing a finished design at the end.
Keep essential text, logos and contact details comfortably inside the edge. A border can make a small cutting error more noticeable. If a supplier requires bleed or crop marks, confirm that the file you deliver meets that specification; a coloured background reaching the page edge alone does not prove it does.
Build a simple, readable layout
- Set the hierarchy Give the name or business name the strongest emphasis. Keep the role and contact details smaller but readable at card size.
- Place the artwork Use a clear logo or image that still looks sharp when viewed at the final printed size. Preserve its proportions.
- Align the details Arrange related text on a consistent left edge or centre line. Use spacing to separate the name from the contact block.
- Reduce clutter Limit the number of type styles and colours. Remove any detail that competes with the main action.
Proof the card at its actual size
An enlarged screen preview can make small text appear more readable than it will be in print. Print a plain-paper proof without automatic scaling, measure it and read it at a normal distance. Ask someone else to check every contact detail against the source.
For a two-sided design, confirm which way the back should face and whether the printer expects separate pages or separate files. Check the PDF after export, including both sides. Do not send a screenshot as the production file unless the supplier specifically accepts that format.
Keep a master you can update
Save the editable .rempress project with a useful name, such as Business-card-master, and keep a separate dated print copy. When a phone number or role changes, update the master and repeat the proof. Old PDFs can otherwise be mistaken for the current version.
The Windows Editor is required to create, edit and save editable layouts. Free Viewer can open supported projects for viewing, printing and PDF export. Check the current pricing page before purchasing the Editor.
