Start with one audience, one main message and one action you want the reader to take. Choose the finished page size, arrange the headline, image and essential details, then save an editable project. Check the flyer at its real print size and proofread every contact detail before producing copies.
Write the message before arranging the page
Decide who should read the flyer and what they should do next: book an appointment, attend an event, request a quote or visit a location. Write the essential facts in plain text first. A clear offer with accurate details is more useful than a decorative page whose purpose is hard to find.
For a local service, include what you do, where you work, a relevant benefit and a usable contact route. For an event, confirm the date, time, venue and any booking requirement. Do not fill empty space with several competing calls to action; choose a main route and make it easy to spot.
Choose the size and printing route
Set the document to the finished size before placing objects. A4 is 210 × 297 mm; A5 is 148 × 210 mm. If you will print on a larger sheet and trim it, distinguish the finished flyer size from the sheet fed into the printer. If printing in the US, check Letter rather than assuming A4.
Ask a commercial printer about bleed, safe margins and required output before designing edge-to-edge artwork. For a home printer, allow for its printable area unless a compatible borderless mode is confirmed. Do not promise a borderless result simply because the artwork reaches the page boundary.
Build a simple visual order
Place related details together. A price separated from its service name or a date far from the event title makes the reader work unnecessarily. Leave space between groups so the flyer can be scanned without reading every line in order.
- Headline State the useful message in a short line that can be understood quickly.
- Supporting detail Explain the offer or event with only the information needed to act.
- Image Use one relevant, sufficiently clear picture rather than several weak decorative images.
- Action Make the booking, contact or attendance instruction obvious.
- Small print Include necessary conditions without letting them disappear into unreadable text.
Build the page in RemPress
Start with a blank document or an appropriate template and check its dimensions. Use separate text boxes for the headline, main information and contact details so you can position them deliberately. Insert your own image, preserve its proportions and crop it to fit the composition instead of stretching it.
Align edges and keep spacing consistent. Use a small number of font choices and colours. Save a .rempress working project early, then use a separate version if you are adapting the design for another event or size. The general first-document guide explains the application workflow in more detail.
Check readability at the intended size
Zoom out until you see the whole flyer and ask what attracts attention first. Then inspect a physical-size proof. Screen enlargement can hide body text that will be too small on paper. Make the main action and essential details comfortably readable for the audience rather than relying on a universal font-size rule.
Use good contrast between wording and its background. If text sits over a busy photograph, move it to a quieter area or add a clear panel behind it. Do not solve every readability problem by making the entire page bold; preserve a useful hierarchy.
Proofread the details that cause real problems
Ask somebody else to check the practical details. The designer often reads what they intended to type. A QR code that scans from a large screen may still fail after reduction or poor printing, so test the actual proof if you use one.
- Business or event name spelled correctly
- Date includes the correct day and year where useful
- Time and location are unambiguous
- Price and any relevant conditions are correct
- Phone number, email and website tested
- Any QR code tested from the printed proof
- Images and fonts used with appropriate permission
- Nothing important clipped by a margin or trim
Print one before printing many
Match the document, paper and printer-driver settings. Check scaling and orientation, then print one copy. Inspect colour, image quality, margins and text. If the flyer will be cut, trim the proof and check that the finished object still works.
Keep the approved editable project and a reference output together. When the offer changes, update the master and produce a new approved version rather than making unrecorded corrections to scattered copies. Date the file clearly so staff do not distribute an expired promotion.
